A simple, home-made weed-killer

With the advent of Spring, homeowners should begin to prepare their lawns and gardens for the new growing season. One aspect of that preparation should include weed removal for a healthier lawn and more vibrant plants and vegetation.

Several options exist to eradicate the never-ending weed problem. First, the gardener can fight the battle by mechanical means, i.e., through the use of a “weed-eater.” Weed-eaters have their advantages – they remove weeds above ground-level and weed eradication above that level is fast. Second, a gardener can attempt to remove weeds manually by simply attempting to dig the weeds up. This method is obviously labor intensive and does not guarantee the weed roots will be completely removed. Third, a gardener can purchase a variety of commercially produced weed killers. In general, they are effective at killing weeds to the root level although most commercially produced weed-killers can be expensive, particularly if a gardener has a significant weed problem.

A far less expensive and just as effective method of weed eradication can be accomplished by using common, household ingredients to make a weed killer. Some simple ingredients combine to make a root-level weed killer. The ingredients are white vinegar and table salt.

To make the weed-killer, heat one gallon of white vinegar until it comes to a rolling boil. Reduce to low heat and add one cup of table salt to the vinegar. Stir the mixture until the salt completely dissolves in the vinegar. Then, allow the mixture to cool and once it has done so, pour the mixture into your favorite sprayer. Apply the mixture to weeds when they are in sunshine – be careful with the application – the home-made mixture will kill all forms of vegetation.

Home-made remedies for typical household problems can be very cost effective. The ingredients for the home-made weed-killer cost approximately one dollar. And, the weed-killer helps homeowners achieve healthier lawns and more vibrant plants and vegetation.
