What's a cell phone "SIM" card?
A SIM card is defined as a "Subscriber Identification Module (SIM)." The SIM card stores information needed to identify the user, the cell phone's phone number, and network activation information. The SIM card is typically installed in a slot on a cell phone under the phone's battery. SIM cards are used in unlocked cell phones around the world, to include the United States. U.S. cell phone providers, such as AT&T, provide SIM cards to their customers with unlocked cell phones to enable usage on the provider’s network. The provided SIM card is encoded with the necessary information to enable service. There are several advantages to SIM cards and use in unlocked cell phones. First, SIM cards can store up to 250 contacts. When transferring a SIM card from one phone to another, the contact list is immediately available in the new phone, as long as the cell phones are useable with the same carrier. Second, if a SIM card is used in an unlocked cell phone, when travelling, a SIM card can be purchased at your destination and you'll have a "local" phone number. In other words, one will be able to reduce roaming charges. And finally, if you own a Quad Band unlocked GSM cell phone, with SIM cards, your phone will operate anywhere in the world.
